So, it’s early 2018, I’m catching up with a friend for an early morning breakfast. We get talking about life and goals for the year, and without a lot of notice, she asks if I want to ride from Canberra to Melbourne and I said, “Yes!”.
Then as I leave the café, and head to work for the day, reality sets in.
-
- I don’t have a bike that will allow me to ride 1,000km
-
- I haven’t ridden more than my morning commute in 10 years
-
- I’m healthy, but not fit
-
- I’ve only got six (6) months to train
-
- The Great Dividing Range is the 5th longest land-based range in the world.
To be honest, there was no option to say ‘no’ when the reason for our ride was to support a good friend’s mission of raising money for ovarian cancer research, an illness that took her mum’s life way too early, a year earlier. Not only did we raise some money, we’ve now managed to raise over $400,000 for the Silver Lining Ride in the last three years.
So, what made me say ‘yes’. What makes me get out of my comfort zone?
For me, when in your comfort zone, your brain doesn’t want anything to change…
Getting out of your comfort zone from time to time creates just enough good stress to ramp up your focus, creativity, pace, and drive. It also helps you respond to life stress when unexpected things happen.
Personally, I love setting myself a challenge and for me it just takes one little decision or a leap of faith to kick start my motivation. The leap of faith involves having a basic belief in yourself and a fundamental trust in the vision of who, what, and where you want to be in the future. The leap of faith involves the belief that good things will happen when you choose to change your life.
So, my challenge for anyone reading this is to get out of your comfort zone, take a leap of faith and I promise like my ride, your decision will have a silver lining far beyond the immediate goal. Whether you decide to run for the first time, set a personal best or push yourself far beyond what you’ve achieved previously, #nowmorethanever it’s important to get out of your comfort zone.
This same principle rings true for workplaces. Many can get trapped in the cycle of doing the same thing, over and over again, but with very little positive outcomes. Sometimes guidance in the areas you want to improve in can help.Contact us at Employ Health to help with your workplace's positive healthy-culture change.
