Health Risk Management: SIA NT Conference Update

Ryan Tiernan Ryan Tiernan 18 January, 2016

Employ Health Director, Matthew Stewart, was proud to be a featured presenter at the 6th Annual SIA NT Conference. The conference themed 'Safety and Zobies' was attended by over 200 delegates at Charles Darwin University.

Matthew has over 10 years experience in workplace health, and is uniquely qualified as both a physiotherapist and chiropractor.  His presentation titled "What do Jarrod Hayne, the NFL and Proactive Risk Management have in common?", explored the approach an organisation like the 49ers adopt to proactively risk manage their human capital.

Professional sporting teams are leaders in the field of health risk management. They value the health of their athletes so highly that the injury management model used should be a guide for best practise across all businesses.

This paradigm of health risk management is the approach adopted by Employ Health.  It has three main features:

  1. Evidence based pre-employment testing to determine if a worker has the physical capacity to perform the job, and no impairments likely to be aggravated in the job.
  2. Health monitoring and early intervention to pick up and treat issues before they impact function and performance.
  3. If injury occurs, having the best possible medical team on board to treat the injury, and the right system in place to to ensure no aggravation of symptoms when returning to normal duties.
